Adjustment-Family and School

We have already mentioned how change can be hard even when it is expected. Unexpected changes such as moving, divorces, re-marriages, or changing schools can also lead to trouble adjusting. It is not uncommon for family members to shut down or act out when these shifts happen. Signs of trouble can vary widely by age, and might look as different as problems with sleeping, eating or setbacks in toilet training, to clinginess, stomachaches, aggression or an increase in risky behaviors. Counseling can assist children and families in moving through these challenges more smoothly and preparedly. Oftentimes families will present with one person who seems to be struggling more than the others, but family counseling can help adjust the system that might be contributing to everyone’s reactions.
