Depression

The word “depressed” gets thrown around a lot, making it hard to know the difference between feeling sad and experiencing depression. Depression can look different for everyone, but often times it consists of a significant decrease in energy, lack of interest in things that the client used to love, an increase in irritability, change in appetite and sleep as well as a sense of hopelessness. Depression can be a result of many factors, including genetics, biological concerns or as a reaction to stress. Counseling can help work towards a decrease in the aforementioned symptoms, as well as identifying triggers and responses. Having an unbiased, nonjudgmental third-party to process these changes with can have a large impact alone. In children, depression is treated with play therapy rather than talk therapy. Children can process through these emotions using the language of play, while counselors can assist the child in navigating these experiences.
